Orthodontic Arts Celebrates National Children’s Dental Health Month
February 18, 2025Orthodontic Arts is celebrating National Children’s Dental Health Month by educating parents on the importance of early orthodontic intervention.
Orthodontic Arts and the American Association of Orthodontists recommend that children visit an orthodontist by age seven to ensure proper oral development and potentially prevent the need for more invasive or costly treatments in the future. An early evaluation allows orthodontists to monitor jaw growth, detect issues like crowding or misalignment, and recommend appropriate treatment options, if necessary.
Dr. Wilson, DDS, MS shares,
“Seeing an orthodontist at an early age is key in helping to identify common issues that prevent the normal eruption of permanent teeth and the proper development of the face and jaws. Many of these issues, when neglected, can result in much more complicated treatment down the road. While certainly not every child will require early orthodontic treatment, when indicated, early orthodontic intervention almost always translates to less invasive, less time-consuming, and less costly treatment overall.”
Orthodontic Arts offers free consultations and early evaluations, making it easy for parents to take the first step in ensuring their child’s long-term oral health.
“Over the years, I’ve seen how even the simplest treatments—like helping a baby tooth come out or guiding a child to break a habit—can make a big difference in their smile as they grow. Early expansion treatment can also help prevent the need to remove permanent teeth later on, says Dr. Birdwell, DDS. “Because I truly believe in the importance of early care, we offer these initial exams at no cost to our patient families.”
Visiting an orthodontist at an early age, before there are visible orthodontic issues, does not always mean a child will need immediate treatment. By age 7 a child will have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, and our orthodontists will be able to recognize orthodontic problems even in their earliest stages.
These essential questions are generally covered during the first exam:
- Is there an orthodontic problem that needs early interception, and if so, what is it?
- Are there any breathing or growth issues that might be complicating my child’s dental development?
- How long is the recommended treatment expected to take?
- How much will the recommended treatment cost and what will my insurance cover?
Recommendations as simple as early removal of a baby tooth, quitting a thumb habit or getting a mouth breathing problem under control can make a tremendous difference.
